Is your Personal Development Work PERSONAL?

TRANSCRIPT OF VIDEO:

One of the things I watch out for in personal development (or personal growth) work, is I see people who are talking about their experiences, their strategies, their tactics. How they did something. They’re trying to present some sort of framework and trying to tell you how easy it is, how simple this is and that if you do things just the way I do, you can get the exact same results. And I kind of withdraw from approaches like that.

And depending on what you’re reading, what you’re consuming – whether it be lectures, or books, or videos, or programs, the question I really want you to think about when it comes to personal development and personal growth, is: Is it PERSONAL? Does it resonate with you?

I’ve had people talk to me about how they have piles of books. They’re devouring content. But there’s a difference between taking something in and then actually being able to incorporate those mindset shifts – those shifts in patterns within your own life. How do you… I mean it’s OK to take ideas and concepts, but are you making it yours? Are you playing to your talents? Are you playing to your strengths?

And that’s really what I invite you to think about and consider. So, I’m not saying: “Don’t read the books. Don’t do the programs. Don’t go to the lectures. Don’t network and take in from other people.” That’s how we grow and how we learn. But develop the ability to then be able to translate what you’re taking in and making it yours.

How do you play innately to who you are? How does it line up with your values? How does it help you meet your needs? How does it align with your beliefs? To me, that’s a huge part of personal growth – is making sure that it’s personal to you.

My name is Elvira Marie Chang. I’m a Trainer and I’m a Gallup Certified Strengths Coach. My priority, as I’m working with others, is making sure as we talk about topics that it’s not general, or strategic, or tactical. It’s that we’re having discussions and then talking it through through the filters of your innate wiring – whether it be your talents, your values, your needs. If you have any questions on this… How do you figure these things out? How do you learn more about this? Feel free to reach out to me. Again, my name is Elvira Marie Chang. Connect with me. Feel free to send me questions. I’d love to talk to you some more.
